Hello, my name is Dr. Julian Chipley. Let me get straight to the point…you are reading this because either you or someone you love is having pain… maybe you have rounding of your shoulders… you feel like your not as tall as you used to be…Yes, your spine is decaying! It is happening to each and everyone of us everyday… slowly and gradually…. just like your teeth decay at first to cavities…then to root canals….then to crowns….and then to dentures.
The problem is that your spine is not like your teeth… You can’t get dentures for your spine when it wears out & spine surgery has about a 50% success rate at best!
Most family doctors believe the best treatment of this spinal decay is to cover it up or ‘fake your body out’ by having you take anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants and pain pills. This is tragic because it makes your problems worse, not better.
Imagine that you or your loved one was having signs of a heart attack. What if you went to the hospital and they just gave you a shot or a prescription to cover up the signs and sent you on your way. If you were having a heart attack…you would likely die… because simply covering up the problem does nothing to correct the problem.
You see, the symptoms of the heart attack are an early warning sign to take seriously and not to just cover up. Well, your spine may not kill you in an instant like your heart… but it sure will ruin your quality of life and lead to an earlier death if it decays and you just cover it up.
Let’s be honest… we weren’t meant to live forever. Our bodies’ peak in our early to mid 30’s and often begin to gradually decline from there on out. Some of us fare better than others…there are a lot of factors involved. First, our parents genes…second, our lifestyle and environment…and third, any traumatic injuries to our spine that didn’t seem so bad 10, 15 or 20 years ago. These three factors affect us all and eventually we all have to deal with Spinal Decay. It is just that some of us won’t have to deal with it till we are 60, 70 or even 80 while others will start to deal with it in their 20’s and 30’s.
When you’re out shopping… you see all those people… you know the ones. They are barely making it across the store. Many of them have rounding of their shoulders and a slumping or hunching of their upper back. Many have a “sway back where they have an increased curvature in their low back due to muscle weakness and the size of their belly. Many have a forward protruding head with a loss of the normal curvature of their neck.
When you see these people, you can’t help but feel sorry for them. But you’ll often feel this internal fear come over you as you ask yourself, “Am I gonna end up this way, too?” The reality is that the outlook is bleak when we age. Something bad will eventually happen to all of us. But, I, for one, love it here on this great earth and I want to stay healthy and happy as long as possible. Of course I don’t know about you, but I want my time here to be as enjoyable as possible…and if I can help it I don’t want to end up like those people I see shopping!
Have you ever noticed how the elderly start to shrink? Many people in their60’s have already lost an inch and many in there 70’s and 80’s have lost 2 or 3 inches.
Why? They are loosing their height because of the degeneration of their spinal discs. The discs in the spine narrow as they dry up. This puts the bones closer together and irritates the spinal nerves and makes you begin to loose inches from your height. Loss of the normal neck and low back curve forces the weight of the head and mid back forward causing headaches, neck, mid-back, and low back pain. This dynamic shift causes the disc tissue to lose water and wear away while surrounding bones take on a degenerative or arthritis condition. Also, a reversed curve in the neck increases the spinal cords vulnerability to trauma, stress, poor posture and accidents.
The beauty of chiropractic care is that it can slow this process down. Patients with degenerative arthritis and degenerative disc disease can often get significant relief and add years of productivity back into their life.
With chiropractic care you can get back to doing the things you want to do. You can walk more. You can play with your kids and pick up your grand kids. You can golf. You can get back to doing yard work. You can continue to work your job with less pain. The best part is that what we do is safe and natural and drug free.
We all start out with a healthy spine and we all gradually degenerate away. This is a normal process. It is just that we all go through these phases of degeneration at our own speed. As was stated earlier, there are three main factors that lead to the speed at which you will begin to experience degenerative arthritis and degenerative disc disease.
1. Your Parents Genes… That’s right, your genetics are inherited and some family trees just have more spinal and joint problems compared to other families.
2. Traumatic Injuries… That’s right, all those sports injuries and slip and falls and that old auto injury all lead to more degenerative arthritis at a younger age.
3. Your Environment… That’s right, what you do in your day-to-day life will greatly affect the speed at which you begin to experience arthritis and degenerative disc changes.
We can’t do a whole lot about our genes and we can’t do a lot about old traumas and injuries from childhood and teenage years, but we can do quite a bit to decrease the onset of arthritis due to our environment.
Are we (Americans / West Virginians) making the best of it when it comes to our health? We sure seem to be eating a lot in this country of ours. We definitely have an over abundance of cars and we just don’t seem to walk much or exercise much anymore.
Yes we work hard, and yes there isn’t enough time in the day. You don’t have to tell me…I understand…I’m with you.
So what can be done? Get evaluated to see if you would be a good chiropractic patient and see what can be done to give you pain relief and slow or stop your degenerative spinal decay down. Let us show you your spine with a Surface EMG Scan. It is quick and painless and it reveals so much.
Think about it. What are you going to do if your spine wears out? They don’t make a replacement spine. If you have had x-rays, bring them in on your initial evaluation and let one of our great doctors evaluate your spine x-rays. We can determine your phase of degeneration.
We cannot reverse the degeneration and decay of your spine that has already occurred. But we can offer you significant pain relief, and we can slow or stop the continued degeneration and decay down. Frequently, we can help to get you back to doing things you used to do. We have great success in reducing your dependence on over-the-counter and prescription medications for the pain and inflammation.
Did you know that poor posture has been associated with many pathological processes (diseases)? And, good posture could prevent such disease processes. Further research has shown that proper posture decreases an athlete’s risk of injury while improving their performance.
Clearly, better posture is good for everyone. It will allow you to live your life to the fullest and open the window to your health. Good posture will slow spinal decay including disc degeneration and arthritis.
Many people have lost the proper curvature in their neck by there late teenage years. They will ask me, “How did I loose my curve?” The causes of decreased curvature in the neck include trauma or accidents, poor posture and bad habits.
Arthritis: The first thing to realize is that arthritis is very common, but not normal. If it were, your entire body would be arthritic. Current research shows that within 2 weeks of an injury, the body will form permanent scar tissue decreasing blood flow to the area, and thus cause a weakness to the spine. These complications result in the body trying to stabilize the spine by putting additional calcium in the vertebrae and joints and also increasing the sensitivity of these joints. That is often why the area is so sensitive to the changes in the weather. The longer this process has been going on, the greater the amount of the arthritis.
Don’t panic by the diagnosis of Arthritis alone. Yes, there are multiple types… much too many to go into here. The most common type is Osteo-Arthritis. This is general arthritis from the wear and tear of life and injuries of the past. Just realize that our treatment for arthritis is very effective. We work to increase the motion in the locked up area of the joint while decreasing the motion in the areas that are being over worked.
We simply work to help the body deal with the arthritis by better balancing and stabilizing the spinal motion. This works to give you relief and to slow the process down or even stop it from worsening.
Degenerative Disc Disease: A report from your doctor that you have a “degenerated disc” can sound scary until you realize that lots of people have degenerated discs and it does not mean surgery. It is important to understand how the disc works in your back, how it is injured, and how it can be safely treated, to get the best results with your condition.
So what is a disc? A disc is nothing more than cartilage similar to the cartilage in your knee. Cartilage covers bones and connects them allowing a joint to be formed. Cartilage and ligaments are what make motion possible but they also restrain movements that are too large. In the case of the spine, there are 24 individual bones called vertebrae. The disc is a cartilage that connects each of these vertebrae. The disc can be injured just like a knee or an ankle can be sprained. The injury will stretch the ligaments and cartilage and cause them to tear.
Whenever the body is injured, inflammation follows which serves to begin the healing process. Damaged tissue is consumed and scars are laid down.
In the case of the disc, the degeneration is usually at the back portion of the disc, because that is the location of the original injury. The disc also contains a more watery center called the nucleus. When injury to the disc occurs, the joint does not move properly. Lack of movement can be just as detrimental as too much movement. With this lack of motion there is less movement of water, in and out of the center of the disc. The disc then dehydrates and begins to collapse under the weight of gravity.
You were likely shown an x-ray of the degenerated disc and told that the space between the vertebrae is smaller because the disc material is degenerating. An MRI or CT scan can also show the degenerated disc. However, it does not mean that you need surgery.
The body is meant to handle degeneration of the disc and many people do quite well despite what an MRI or x-ray may show. Other patients have a bulging of the disc along with the loss of height. This bulging can press on the nerve and cause back or leg pain (sciatica). The bulge can also ooze out of the disc into the canal (a disc herniation) and cause similar or even worse pressure on the surrounding nerve structures. If the pressure upon the nerves beside the disc can be reduced, then it is possible to relieve pain and slow the degenerative process.
This is the purpose of our treatment.
When we work to balance out the spinal motion and stabilize the area of your problem we often have great result in reducing the pressure on the irritated nerve. That gives you pain relief. Getting pain out of your back, your hip, and even your leg. But the bonus of the treatment is that restoring function and stabilizing the injury will slow or sometimes even stop the degenerative disc from worsening.
Whether you have arthritis, disc degeneration, or even a disc bulge or herniation, the first step is to get yourself evaluated as quick as possible. The longer you wait, the greater the spinal decay. The more the decay, the more difficult you are to treat. The more difficult the treatment is, the more treatment that is needed and the greater the expense to you. So, stop thinking about it and call us today to set up your initial evaluation.
As part of your initial evaluation we will talk about your past history. We will talk about your family genes. We will talk about your past traumas and injuries. Most importantly we will talk about your daily environment and what aggravates your condition. Then we will do a thorough exam using orthopedic and neurological tests to determine what’s wrong. We will look at your spinal motion and your flexibility. We will perform a spinal s-EMG scan to look at your muscle, nerve, and joint function.
From all of our tests and the s-EMG we will form a diagnosis of what is wrong that is causing your degenerative condition and what can be done to treat the degeneration. We will put together a Recommended Action Plan to get you on your road to recovery. We will sit down on a follow-up visit and explain our findings and treatment recommendations. We will explain what you can do to help yourself recover.
Usually the first step is to begin a treatment plan with a goal of reducing pain and increasing flexibility of the spinal joints and overlying muscles.
Over in the right side column (Or under this report in mobile format) you will see a sample of what an s-EMG test looks like ......
The Chipley Chiropractic Treatment Program:
1. It all starts with increasing spinal motion to limit and slow the spinal decay with chiropractic treatments.
2. This is coupled with a mechanical traction to relax and stretch out your spine while increasing the joint motion.
3. Sometimes we will use a deep high frequency electrical stimulation with ice packs or heat packs to reduce swelling in the area.
4. Then we design a specific home stretch program for your troubled areas.
5. We design a nutritional supplement program to help you stay at your best.
6. We’ll discuss your sleep posture…your mattress…your pillow.
7. Then we will add in exercise recommendations to help you maintain and improve your posture.
8. We will re-scan your spine with follow up s-EMG scans every 4 to 6 weeks and continue active treatment for anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks to 3 to 4 months.
***You’ll always get to decide how much effort you want to put in… we will make the recommendations. You can do all or some of them… whatever fits your lifestyle.
You can quit at any time but if you see significant improvement you’ll likely want to continue for a while. We strongly believe that you’ll see so much improvement in your overall quality of life that you’ll want to continue!
At the end of your active treatment you can then decide if you want to continue to maintain your improvement with occasional follow-ups. Many patients choose to take advantage of our Lifestyle Membership Program after they are improved so that they help keep continued spinal decay and degeneration away. But whether you choose to continue with such supportive care is totally up to you.
